A healthi-fied classic dinner recipe the entire fam will love!
This Gluten Free Fish & Chips recipe is bound to become a fave! Made without oil and crisped to perfection, this recipe is healthier and even more delicious than the traditional. It’s protein-packed, easy to make and can be whipped up in under 20 minutes. Now that’s what I call the perfect weeknight meal!
Hi there! 👋🏼 Growing up I was obsessed with Fish & Chips. No seriously, it was the only meal I would get at restaurants. (Talk about unhealthy!) And when I stayed at my grandparent’s for a week during the summer, I swear I would go through multiple boxes of fish sticks.
It’s a miracle I didn’t weigh 200 lbs. as a child.
Anyway, we recently went to a new (or should I say, new to me) restaurant here in Des Moines – Louie’s Wine Dive – that had an amazing Gluten Free Fish and Chips recipe and it made me want to try and replicate it.
Que the Air Fryer Gluten Free Fish & Chips!
We got an air-fryer for Christmas and surprisingly I use it more than my Instant Pot. We’ve made fries, potatoes, steak, pork chops, veggies, hash browns, chicken strips and, you’ve guessed it, fried fish in it. If you don’t have one, I highly, highly recommend it! Maybe add it to your Prime Day or Christmas list.
The air-fryer makes everything super crispy, just like your oil-frying and it is way less messy and 10x healthier!
What you Need for GF Fish & Chips:
- alaska cod
- eggs
- gluten free panko
- tapioca flour (or coconut flour)
- thyme / garlic powder / paprika
- sweet potato fries
You can use fresh or frozen cod. Either works! And if you don’t have tapioca flour on hand, you can substitute coconut flour, as it was a similar texture (fine and powdery).
How to make Gluten Free Fish & Chips in the Air-Fryer
- Preheat the oven to 425 degrees and spread sweet potato fries (store bought or homemade) on a baking sheet and place in the oven for 30 minutes, flipping halfway.
- Next, prep the fish. Make sure the cod is thawed and pat dry with a paper towel. Using a sharp knife, cut the cod lengthwise to create strips (about ½ inch thick).
- Next, get your bowls ready. Place tapioca flour (or coconut flour) in one shallow bowl, beat 2 eggs in another, and add gluten free panko with thyme, garlic and paprika in the last.
- One at a time, place a strip of cod in the tapioca flour, covering thoroughly. Then dip in the egg mixture, letting excess run off before moving to the gluten free panko mixture. Once fish is completely covered, place in the air-fryer bin and repeat.
- Set your air-fryer to 375 degrees and let fry for 20 minutes.
How to make Homemade Tartar Sauce
You can’t have fish and chips without a good tartar sauce. Luckily it’s easy to make!
- Mix together 1/3 cup mayo or plain greek yogurt, 2 teaspoon dill pickle relish (I simply cut up a pickle slice 😉), 1 teaspoon spicy mustard, 1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice, and a sprinkle of dill (fresh or dried) in a small bowl.
